Bear Protection & Cadaver Detection

"Nadi" Karelian Bear Dog

Nadi (born Nov. 12, 2008) is a Karelian Bear Dog (KBD) from the Wind River Bear institute. KBD's are a Finnish breed. When Nadi was six weeks old, she was imprinted on Grizzly, Black Bear, and other animal carcasses. With her outstanding sense of smell, Nadi goes directly to the source. At three months of age, Nadi started imprint training on human cadaver scent. At this young age she is able to pick up the scent from 100 yards away and go directly to the source.

As a Bear Protection KBD, Nadi will alert us by barking at any perceived danger while we are out in the field and working cases such as detection or Search & Rescue.

As a community service, Nadi is also a partner with the Wind River Bear Institute Partners-In-Life programŽ. The Partners-In-Life ProgramŽ, works to save bears by teaching both people and bears correct behaviors. Even though she is very young, Nadi is already involved with community education and visiting elementary school children with Moose, Josie, and Zoe.

Cadaver Detection

Nadi has finished her Basic and Advanced Cadaver Classes. She was "top nose" in her class. She is now a fully trained and operational cadaver dog.

Nadi is able to locate fresh cadaver, forensic evidence, historic graves, human bones; fresh and historic, and cremated remains.

Working with a Forensic Anthropology class and demonstrating to them how a properly trained K- 9 can help locate forensic evidence.

Nadi has worked two successful cadaver detection cases.

Location of a drowning victim in 74' of water. Location of a 65 year old historic grave on the Medicine Bow National Forest.

Nadi is also in training for Search & Rescue like her big brother Moose.
